Development Update #1 - Beginnings

So, this is the start of my blog to my newest game, Keep Sane. I posted several links to the game on my H game dev blog for Resident Evil: Progeny, but have decided to separate this from the other blog.

What is 'Keep Sane'?

Keep Sane is a psychological horror game. I will be making both a H and a non-H version. The game is strictly 18+

What can I expect from 'Keep Sane'?

The game will contain an in-depth narrative, with the aim of immersion and empathy with the main character. The HUD in the game is minimal, weapons are scarce, and enemies are deadly.

Other features of this game (will) include:

- Dynamic lighting
- Dynamic fluid for 'Tainted Ground'
- Choices throughout the game leading to multiple endings

    1. I haven't introduced the horror as much as I'd like to yet. I hope I'm able to present all the ideas I have in my head for this game accurately. ;)

  2. Very well done in the fear factor department, I'm seeing a lot of potential in this game.

    However I do have an issue where the game crashes shortly after the scene where she says "Hello?" only to be told to "Run!" shortly afterwords.

    About three seconds later the game crashes, every time. Not sure if it's me but I DL'd the game a second time and still had the crash.

    Thought I should let you know, but since the game is still in development I didn't expect perfection.

    Regardless, I'm looking forward to more material!

    1. Ah, the game doesn't actually crash, the character loses the ability to move while in the cutscene (speaking to the currently 'blob of death')

      You then have to run away from said blob of death (follow the arrows)

      I'll try to make the sense of direction a bit clearer for the next update.

    2. actually that happened to me, it's not programming because when my games crash a message appears telling me it's not working, i got that at that very same moment.

    3. Ah, does it come up with a message upon crashing? I'd like to know if it's a problem with the enemy code, as it seems to run without problems on my machine.

  3. Gave it a look. Can say it seems like it could be interesting. Hopefully won't be too bland like most R&R. Though, do have to say the elevator seems badly constructed as around only every 3-rd or fourth time, it refused to have me escape, and just had the black blob go inside anyhow. And all of those times, I had to also pick the last "X" as well as the arrow. So do have to say it feels a little "eh" in that regard. Along with having enemies that can manoeuvre a lot better than you. You're supposed to be powerless in horror games, not pathetic xP

    But yeah, assuming stuff gets explained story wise, like, why you're nude and shizz, it could get interesting. Could really go with some control info though. Along with re-made buttons, as the sprint is not very well placed with the WASD movement. Overall the atmosphere is interesting. But will need quite a bit of tinkering. Oh, and would definitely recommend lowering the punishment time, assuming you got that planned. Both death wise, and chase wise. As long re-spawn is just tedious and gets players frustrated instead of "I can do this". And insta-gib just feels annoying as the game should be hard, not due to the controls.

    Hope I'm not sounding too negative. It's quite late atm.

    1. I second this. Actually, I'm glad somebody told me it was an "elevator," since I'd just assumed it was a light-colored cafeteria for dark blobs of death. Not once did anything happen except for inevitable death and suckage. Atmosphere is good, but there's not enough here to keep me interested yet.

    2. Thanks for the comment! It didn't sound too negative at all, it's all worthwhile feedback!

      As always, my aim is to bring something new in regards to the H industry. I'm actually aiming this game to have a Non-H version too (The Non-H one will be a bit more gruesome, but the H one will have more content in general)

      I'm still working on the introduction sequence, I plan to build it up a lot more, as well as explain the controls a bit better. The "X" is actually telling you to avoid that way. The problem with the elevator at the moment is that you need to be more towards the back of the elevator before it registers you're in there, then you need to click the button. I'll be changing it though.

      The main character won't be in the nude in final, just setting up the animations first. There's quite a bit I've planned for the story though.

      I'll be adding in customizable controls soon, but I didn't think that CTRL was too much of a stretch for the sprint.

      The "punishment time" as you call it, will be changed. I'll be adding an actual attack animation for enemies (when it's not a blob of death) so you can potentially dodge and not get killed by just touching it. I understand it's a bit frustrating at the moment.

    3. Nice to hear. And derp, slow reply. Sorry for that.

      And heh, that is actually one of my goals as well xP Not in the exact terms of what content, but I'd like to have less generic, bland porn norm content, and actually have something new done. Personally find it quite staggering with the amount of lacking innovation. Like, if taking ex: your other work, the Res-E. It has some new touches to it compared to other RoR games, but like... to what I know, there's really no (PROPER) games in which you can play a male, or be able to rape as the female. (heck, game based around that would be unique on it's own) Or rarely even with any females in it. To make it a short ramble: all "male" ones just got cardboard, overly cute/sexy female chars out to pleasure the male. And most that contain females just do a half-assed job with then, at times even just sticking dicks on em. Best I've seen so far is a freelance work based of the "legend of krystal", but even that is kinda "eh" as it has a ton heavier male focus.

      But anyhow, can discuss and talk things for hours so will cut it xP (wouldn't mind discussing stuff as a whole or giving feedback if you'd like) And yeah, I figured the x's were "no-no" things. But as said: At times it felt like the only times the elevator worked, was if I went and "took" the last X, before I headed in.

      And okies. Could be really neat if done well.

      And sounds good. And eh, for me at least, I had to pinkie the ctrl, so it was a bit of a odd hand placement.

      And well, that's the general term used in both stealth games, and ones you have a "death effect" in. As said, atm, if you fail to have the elevator work, you gotta sit through the ENTIRE intor sequence, again, and again, and again. If felt slow enough the first time,then it worked to build some pacing/atmosphere, the other it just feels like pointless padding.

      But yeah, hoping for it to stick out and be unique. Along with avoiding the too generic or bland porn norms. (like, I dunno, maybe going against the superficial norms, having the main char be ex. small busted and well endowed. Just random example :P But yeah, breaking some stereotypes would be neat.)

  4. I am following your RE:P as well and at the very least I can say that I see a lot of potential in your work with horror and H-content so keep it up work on the controls and story I believe in you :)

    1. Thank you! It's great to see someone from the RE:P site, and it's nice that people have faith in me! I feel like I've been letting everyone down recently, and been in a bit of a negative cycle, but I realised I've been really unappreciative towards the fans I've had (who've followed me for so long already)

  5. It's a little silly without animations or models, but I'm looking forward to it continuing. Progeny is a great project, especially with virgin rape, but when you can't rely on your artist, I understand that slowing things down.
    If you can create most of this yourself, I'm happy to offer you my moral support
